And while being anti-climactic is true of : many boss fights, it's not a requirement. : They're boss fights because they are not merely different in degree from : other encounters, but entirely different in kind. : The Scarab, the Heretic, Regret, and Tartarus are all encounters that cannot : be played like other encounters. : The Scarab itself cannot be damaged. It is only destroyed when you reach the : interior. It's a borderline boss, I admit, and when it won an award as the : "best boss battle" a lot of people complained. : The Heretic, I think, is probably also borderline because he, at least, is a : unit that can be killed like any other. It's his magic holodrones, that : despite being holograms, have REAL WEAPONS that make people call foul on : him. : Regret and Tartarus are the worst offenders. Regret simply cannot be killed : by any means other than a melee strike, and there's absolutely no reason : established in the game universe for this to be true. Add that to the fact : that other weapons damage him, but don't kill him, and for the sake of : this encounter you've taken the entire established rules of the fictional : universe and thrown them right out the window. : Tartarus is even worse. On Legendary he can only be damaged when his shield : is down, and his shield can only be taken down by Johnson's sniper rifle-- : another, presumably identical rifle, won't do it. Johnson also fires the : sniper faster than you can-- it'll overheat if you try. : If you knock him off the platform, he magically returns. The normal rules of : the Halo universe simply don't apply to him. And so most of what the : player has learned after going through Halo 1 and Halo 2 is not of use : when fighting him. : Instead, you have to follow pre-set sequences, like learning the turns of a : Pac-Man maze. Lather, rinse, repeat. Board Regret's chair, punch him, he : teleports away. Take cover, find Regret again, repeat. : Find cover, wait for Johnson to drop Tartarus' shields, pop him in the head : with a few Carbine shots, lather, rinse, repeat. : Incidentally if you haven't tried it yet, the best place to do this from is : the rotating platform where Commander Keyes stands during this sequence. : You can't kill her, either-- but you can knock her off the platform with a : plasma grenade. She just re-appears after a few moments. I agree pretty much with everything you say... and in terms of the bigger picture, all those encounters just proved to me that Bungie shouldn't be in the business of making Boss battles. They just can't really do it with any... what would be the word? "Conviction"? It just feels like they were forced to make them (not by external forces, but for the sake of the story or whatnot) and it just couldn't be pulled off convincingly. IMO! - M
