I actually think the particle beam rifle is a MASER. Basically the particles are excited to such a degree that they create radiation that is fired at the target. The Convenant Carbine I think is some kind of projectile weapon or slug thrower, like the human rifles. I was hoping that it actually fired frozen nitrogen bullets or something like that. The projectile would enter like a bullet but then it would melt back into a gas, exploding outward. The cool thing about this is that there would be no trace of the bullet after a few minutes just a big hole where it was. :P I could be wrong, however.
