500 years isn't enough time

In Response To: Global Warming and the Halo backstory (long read) (Jordan117)

Nice theory, but I don't agree with it. Seawalls are common worldwide, they protect cities from storms, tsunamis etc.

500 yrs is not enough time to melt the icecaps enough to completely flood costal cities, and then retreat. It took thousands of years for all the shallow inland lakes within the intermountain west of North America to dry up at the end of the Pliestocene (the Great Salt Lake in Utah is acutally a remnant of a much, much larger lake).

I don't recall seeing any docks extending out into the sand, but maybe I need to replay those levels again. I do remember seeing large concrete dikes extending out into the water if I remember correctly, which is something you commonly see in port towns. Port towns often have concrete, or earth dikes or lines of wooden posts sticking way out from the shore to slow down the waves which makes the water less choppy for boats, and reduces shoreline erosion.

Here are the best "dike" pics i can find. I'm sure you can imagine what you might come up with searching for that term.

"If" global warming even exists (at least in the man-made armageddon that Al Gore preaches about), I don't think the apocolypitc version of massive sea rising would subside between now, and the time Halo takes place. I may subscribe to the notion though that global warming might cause water and air temps to increase in the tropical regions enough to cause more massive hurricaines and the such, which would need a bigger sea wall to protect the city. Maybe mombasa is sinking, like New Orleans, and needs a bigger wall, could be a number of things.

I like how well thought out and researched your theory is, but I can't for a second believe that the sea level raised enough to swallow up cities and then retreated within a span of 500 years.
