I think you've hit the nail on the head of what Bungie was trying to do with Halo 2, and why that ticks off more competitive players*. Bungie tried to flatten the learning curve so that worse players have a better chance against good players. I think that is a mistake. Imagine if the NBA said that since amateurs at the local gym were getting owned by Kobe Bryant and Shaq, that they needed to change the game of basketball so you didn't have to dribble, the basket was 8 feet high, and the rim was the size of a baby swimming pool. No, the correct solution is to balance the game as best as you can**, and then for amateurs to play with other amateurs, and Shaq and Kobe to play with other people their skill level. That way everyone has fun without dumbing down the game. Matchmaking would have accomplished this nicely, making the flattened learning curve of the weapons unnecessary. People who like running around Blood Gulch with the AR could do that with other AR users, and people good enough to use the pistol competently would level up to play with other people their level. * By competitive, I don't just mean people who fly across the country to go to tournaments, but players who try to get good at the game and want to be rewarded for skill. This is a much larger group than just the tournament-attending crowd. ** Where balance means no cheap exploits (like getting a lead and playing keep away for an hour, or getting both snipers on Zanzibar TS and setting up camp on the beach). Balance doesn't mean flattening the learning curve so that beginners can hang with seasoned vets. Basketball is a balanced game, even though Kobe and Shaq would own the players at the local gym 10 times out of 10. |
