In Response To: Re: My Thoughts on the Halo Series (ubersaurus) : Further, you don't start with the pistol on every map in Halo 1. You have to
That's why everyone played with Generic starting weapons instead of Custom. Spawning with a plasma pistol and no grenades on Blood Gulch was just stupid (in a "WTF were they thinking?" kind of way), and the game's multiplayer would have faded pretty quickly (or at least maps like Blood Gulch) if everyone had to play with Plasma Pistols. That's pretty much the exact problem of SMG spawns. If you spawn with one of the weakest guns in the game, you're going to be screwed unless you can get your hands on something else. On a map like Coagulation, that often means dying and respawning until the enemy sniper runs out of ammo. Of course it's possible to use smart tactics to help your chances somewhat, but there is no way you can argue that the SMG requires as much finesse as the old pistol. It is a relatively short range, inaccurate, weak spray gun reminiscent of the Klobb from Goldeneye (not exactly a compliment). In a FFA game it's a total crapshoot who gets the kill when two people are shooting someone because it gets no headshots. The victor of a battle is determined by who can hold the huge reticle on their enemy the longest while they pour bullets into them. Very little in the way of aim is required. And you have no hope at all if you're in the open and someone has a BR/Carbine/Sniper/turret/vehicle (assuming roughly equal skill levels). None. You have almost no hope if the other guy has a sword, rocket, or one of the better dual combos (basically everything except the needler). If you say you can consistently kill a sword wielder (say, in the bases on Midship) with one plasma rifle against good players, then I'd be very interested in seeing some footage of how that works. If you think the finesse is the same, you need to dust off your copy of Halo 1 again and remember what it was like. I played it for the first time in forever on Labor Day weekend and I couldn't believe how much my aim sucked after being used to Halo 2. I actually had to aim instead of just jerking the reticle somewhere near their head and getting a headshot. Strafing actually made a difference since it was possible to miss shots. Losing on Halo 1 is more fun than winning on Halo 2 because I feel like I've been outplayed instead of being screwed over by not having the right gun. Anyone live in NYC and interested in some bi-weekly Halo 1 2v2 LAN action? Shoot me an email. Playing Halo 1 over Labor Day was the best time I've had in a video game that I can remember in the last 2 years. |
