In Response To: Re: My Thoughts on the Halo Series (Psychophan7) : First part, about the lack of strategic usage, is that frag grenades create a
That's not what grenades are for, and you example exactly what he's talking about; that grenades in Halo 2 are not room clearers, they are distractions and saturation fire. Take the middle BR on lockout as an example; a player can sit there while being pelted by grenades for a decent amount of time. Halo 1's grenade radius means two would kill him, no matter where he stood in that room. Yes, Halo 2 grenades have strategic use, but they consist almost entirely of bouncing around corners or off the ground. I have *never* seen someone use the smoke from a grenade as a screen on purpose, and using them as a deterrent just makes you an easy target for someone else. [Afterall, you're busy keeping someone occupied with grenades that won't actually kill them - it's just area suppression and it leaves you open and visable to a counter-attack from a different angle, especially when the grenades give you away.] : Fall damage (Three in a row?). Fall damage wasn't removed, per se. The way
: On the actual note of falling, I have mixed thoughts on it. On one hand, it
No, fall damage really needs to be brought back. It has significant effects in combat, and adds some good tactical depth. I don't remember anyone complaining about it - afterall, it's quite logical: You fall far enough, you die. Just like in real life. It's not some arbitrary rule that doesn't make sense. : Jumping. Jump height and distance should stay. If you noticed in Combat
Not being able to jump over a ghost or warthog is not a bad thing. It is far too difficult to splatter in Halo 2. Practically considered, the Ghost must boost, and the Warthog is entirely useless. In relation to 'jacking a vehicle, it only has an impact on Banshees, and a good pilot wouldn't fly that low to the ground in the first place. I really don't see how being able to jump higher in Halo 2 corellates to having an easier time of 'jacking a warthog. : Ladders. Ladders should only exist to add atmosphere. I like the ladder on
: Grav lifts seem noisy because you get a free ride at high speeds when there
If a sniper is killing people at the Lockout gravity lift, and I accidentally go up the lift, I am sniper fodder. If that lift was instead a ladder, and I knew a sniper was watching that location, I could not accidentally go up the ladder. If I don't know a sniper is watching it, and I go up, and he shoots me, I am either dead, or now aware a sniper is shooting me, and able to take action. [Like jumping off the ladder - something you can't do with a gravity lift.] The way I see it, ladders ain't all that bad. : Active Camo and Overshield. Active camo is just bending light around you
Active Camoflauge is useless in Halo 2. I would rather the invisability powerup actually make me invisable. A camo guy is still fodder to a sniper, it just requires some steadier aim, and any gun just requires a single hit for the auto-aim to come roaring back. The overshield is a bonus, it should stay that way. Having every opposing player single you out is not a bonus, and makes the powerup much less effective. In a sense, it really only serves its full purpose in one on one matches. : Stage Design. The upper Terminal garage has a viable entry point that no
There is no arguing that these locations are campsites. Here's an even easier way of finding campsites: Play zombies. The room everyone hides in is the best campsite on that map. : Weapons. I whole-hearted disagree with you. Remember the campers? Also, a
Alright, you get a sniper, I'll use an SMG, the map is lockout. First to one ki- Oh whoops, I got sniped in the head. Although I do agree about your statement, it is in a different sense: both weapons are not very good against a sniper. Dual weapons used in a non-dual fashion ARE NOT effective. They are [somewhat] effective when they are being dual wielded. I would not, and do not consider dual wielding a good way to kill someone unless the lag is so terrible I can't hit them at more than 5 paces with a BR. : Weapons. A pistol is a side-arm, it shouldn't be a main weapon. The strip
If I want a different game, I'll play a different game. There are things that make Halo, Halo, and in many eyes, Halo 2 is missing a lot of those things. I don't mind the pistol being removed, I have played online over xbc with it, and I see what Frankie is talking about when he says everyone would just play Pistol games. [It's pretty much all anyone plays on xbc.] Your argument swings both ways however, don't like Halo 1's gameplay? Adapt. I find myself almost wholeheartedly agreeing with Gravemind's proposed weapon changes and balances. [Though I would personall remove all the redundant weapons: Beam Rifle, Brute Plasma, Carbine] : Plasma Pistol: Are you aware that there is a matchmaking gametype aimed
Are you aware that the noob combo is really, really cheap? Like up there with a sword kind of cheap. : Sword: Words cannot express my confoundment at your lack of ability to take
Man, no need for the ad hominum. A sword guy *is* dangerous, and treating him like a normal guy running around is silly. This just feels like you're taking potshots at the argument without explaining how, exactly, someone should be taking care of a sword wielder. : Rocket: Rockets aren't smart at all. They frequently crash into objects other
Rockets'll crash into objects because the thing they were locked onto got behind said object. Your statement "should a rocket even get close to vehicle it will miss." seems quite true: A rocket that does not hit its target does indeed miss. I disagree that there is nothing wrong with the rocket launcher, however. Too often someone will seemingly fire a rocket at point blank range, kill me, but survive. A larger blast radius takes care of that, and it's certainly not game-breaking. [Heck it's even a little fun! Oddball rockets on the old Halo 1 warlock is craaaazy.] : Brute Shot: Aim higher. Brute Shot: Do more damage please. : Fuel Rod: Frame rate. ...That's not really an excuse for anything. If the framerate is bad, it needs to be a less graphically intensive weapon. : Vehicles. Spectre was in an old draft of Combat Evolved. Banshee's are dead
Banshee's wouldn't be dead weights if the rockets were less accurate when they lock on, and I don't see how hovering is at all counter-intuitive. I pull backwards on the thumbstick, and I move backwards really slowly - in effect, hovering. : Scorpion: You didn't complain about the complete inability to board it due to
Actually he did. Something like "Make the scorpions' co-axial machinegun less good." : Wraith: The boost on the Wraith is needed for the ability to ram. Remember
It's a mortar cannon, it's not supposed to shoot things right next to it. The player should have some support, as the vehicle is in effect, mobile artillery. Furthermore, there's nothing wrong with old school. What exactly did you find un-fun about the 'old-skool' stuff? : Remove a Warthog wheel. It won't drive the same way. Blow the engine apart,
The only thing I've actually seen, is the Ghosts' shots going all askew after taking some damage. Haven't noticed any of the other stuff. : Seriously, most of the stuff I have read up to this point makes no sense what
There's a reason for this: People wanted another Halo game after Halo. Not a game based on Halo but with completely new weapons, and gameplay. I still like Halo 2, but it is not what it could've been. Halo is still much better in my books - I base this on the fact that I almost got rid of Halo 2 after I finished the campaign. Multiplayer is the only thing that saved it. [My very frank opinion.] : The same ideology is applied to Halo 2 from Combat Evolved. It's a similar
I disagree. A sequel to a game should not be so different that you cannot even compare them. What's the point in making a sequel then? It's based off Halo, and is a sequel to Halo, so Halo is gonna be used as the bar. I had MUCH more fun playing Halo then I have ever had in Halo 2. A lot of people will disagree with me; I think they're selling the game short.
