: Short of fiesta weapons or no starting weapon at all, the starting weapon is
: going to set the tone of the game no matter what, because that's what
: everyone has every singe time they spawn in. Halo 1 had more pistoling
: than anything else because that's what people spawned with. Halo 2 is
: somewhat similar in that it has more SMG spraying than anything else
: because that's what people spawn with. The difference is that because the
: SMG is so weak and limited, people will grab anything and everything they
: can to try to up their fire power. The question is not whether one weapon
: gets used more than the others, but what kind of weapon sets the tone of
: the game. Do you want to play a game that mostly revolves around point
: blank bullet spam where you're almost totally screwed if you see someone
: with a better gun, or a game that mostly revolves around aiming and
: strafing and use of cover where you can use your skill and wits to outplay
: another player even if he has a slight weapon advantage? Many of us
: greatly prefer the latter. (And no, the BR doesn't fill the same role. Too
: little ammo, too short of range, too slow to kill esp. on Live, huge
: hitboxes and autoaim make strafing pointless so it's 90% who starts
: shooting first, which is boring, etc.)
The reasoning you used for the pistol in this paragraph also applies to the SMG. Aiming, strafing, use of cover, and wits, coupled with just plain KNOWING how to use the SMG make it fully capable of eliminating threats with better weapons. Even at a medium range, the SMG is useful(the BR and carbine beat it, but that's to be expected). Calling Halo 2 "point blank bullet spam" is just as much a failed stereotype as calling Halo 1 "all pistol, all the time".
