In Response To: My Thoughts on the Halo Series (Gravemind) I found the letter to be well-researched, well-organzied, well-written, and very concise. Gravemind makes several keen observations and more than a few good suggestions. However, I do think his message falters in regards to weapon balance. He raises the issue of convergent technology, but fails to properly address it. After all, what's the point of keeping redundant weapons like the Carbine and Beam Rifle? All the tweaking in the world won't make it less imaginative. Technological convergence is about using different methods to perform what is the same task. Compared to Forerunner tech, Human weapons are woefully primitive; they fire solid ammunition and can only go in a straight line (the Rocket Launcher's lock-on notwithstanding). The Covenant have mastered projected-energy and the ability to track targets, so this should be reflected in how they design weapons. The under-utilized Needler is a perfect example of an alien weapon that is actually ALIEN in design. It performs roughly the same function as the SMG (i.e. spamfire), but the mechanics are different. For example, instead of the boring Carbine, how about some kind of cluster laser? You charge a shot, paint your target (perhaps as many as three at once), and let fly a trio of homing lasers? Of course, it couldn't be foolproof (the Needler certainly isn't), but at least it would be something fun and different. |
