Re: Predictable?

In Response To: Predictable? (Narcogen)

: To take an extreme cynical look at that, this is like saying that the first
: round of Russian roulette went well, why not keep playing?

I don't have a cynical bone in my body, so I'm sure I don't know what you mean.

All I meant was that it's silly to pretend Russian Roulette is less dangerous because the guy who's playing it is a friend of yours.

: However, does that mean that having finished one successful project, you dump
: all the people you just worked with and go with a completely different
: band of unknowns, because it worked well the last time?

No - but that's not really an option here, right? There is no preexisting Bungie movie squad.

: Yes, but now he's known as the voice of the Master Chief from Halo and Halo
: 2.

That fans of the game know him now is irrelevant. My point was that I doubt anyone in the fan community knew of the guy while the game was in development - and if they did, they would know him from his work as a DJ. And if you're going to question the abilities of a director because he's never done a feature film before, you might as well question the suitability of a lead actor who's never lifted anything heavier than a station ID. But there wasn't any huffing and puffing over Bungie's choice of voice actors - probably because they never made a point of announcing them ahead of time - and the general consensus seems to be that the guy acquitted himself well. With that in mind, the dour pronouncements about whether this director is appropriate or up to the task seem just a little precious.

: If all the movie needs is a voice talent, based on past performance,
: who would be better?

There's no guarantee that all the movie needs is voice talent, either from a perfomance or marketing perspective.

: If it's a good idea to pick an unknown director so
: preconceived notions and past experiences don't mess up the Halo film, why
: not replace Downes with another unknown? Why not the same for Taylor?

Why not? I know it's heresy 'round these parts, but if the movie has none of the actors from the game I'd still check it out. I don't think they're bad - but I don't think they're the only two actors on the planet who are capable of playing those roles.

: Let's not overdo that angle. Jones had just been invited on stage at MacWorld
: in front of quite a few members of the gaming and computer industry press,
: and impressed quite a lot of people, if I recall.

Gaming press at MacWorld? Ha ha ha ha ha!

: It's almost as if you're saying the buyout was a wild and unjustified stab in
: the dark that Microsoft made without doing any research.

I'm not saying that at all. But if one were to look at Bungie's track record, especially in terms of sales and (for lack of a better phrase) mindshare, they did not have the high profile of, say, Rare.

: More importantly, if all other things are equal, and a third party had to
: make a guess about the potential for success of a project based on who is
: running it, virtually the only benchmark one can possibly have is the past
: performance of that individual.

But people are very selective about the performances they choose to remember. Alien and Blade Runner were swell, but they're also 20 years old. Ridley Scott makes movies like Hannibal and G.I. Jane nowadays.

: Ridley Scott is incapable of directing a film version of a game that is
: largely based on a movie he already directed?

: Alan Dean Foster is incapable of writing a script for a game that is largely
: based on a movie he already novelized?

I didn't say they were incapable. I'm sure they'd do a very workmanlike job. I just said it would be safe, predictable and boring. :-)

: ...it sounds like you'd be coming
: down on the other side of the table now, the only exception being that you
: hold "Halo: The Movie" to different standards than "Halo:
: The Game". Why does the former have to be more original, less safe,
: and more risk-taking than the latter in order to be good?

Because I've already experienced the latter. Regardless of who directs/writes/acts/etc., the Halo movie is probably going to be about a tough guy in a green suit who shoots a lot of mean aliens. And there's already a lot of well-executed story stuff floating around in my consciousness. So I have this preexisting knowledge of what Halo is all about. And while I want the movie to jibe with what I already know, I don't want to feel like I've seen it all before.

: Everybody's acting like
: they've dodged a bullet by not signing an experienced director, when I
: think the reality is they are taking a huge chance. It may pay off
: spectacularly for them-- I hope it does. It also may not, and there is
: comparatively little one can point to to say definitively that it will.

One can't say definitively either way. The rose-colored glasses don't seem any worse to me than the dun-colored glasses of the pessimists. It's too early to say they've dodged a bullet - and it's also too early to say they've blown it. I won't know until I see the movie. So I reserve judgment but occasionally play devil's advocate.
