He was still alive when he was infected. think of it this way. robots work in a closed circuit. info from comp goes to robot. robot moves as told by comp. tells comp that it moved. cycle repeats. now imagine that a router was placed in betweeen that blocked all signals to the main computer, or the central nervous system of a person. the router had to do something with that "data". it just deletes it obviously. the "data", or pain, just gets deleted. but, the "router(flood infection form) can still feel pain. if it doesn't block the "ports"(signals from the phiriphial nervous system, like pain nerves) (example, jenkins' "ports' weren't blocked all the way and he retained some conciousnes) correctly it will feel pain and if it is directly damaged it just won't work and there will be no signals reaching anything anymore. thats when the host dies. there is no signal to keep living.
