Or the ark... because the hole looks a lot grander than a capital ship... and people haven't dug there because you don't randomly select places to dig, it could be at pole for sake, and it looks deep, like miles.

Some one said something about MC being there already, this is not the first level, or at most it is not right after the covies land in sol.

also we know the covies DO fire at things to dig, on reach they blasted a mountain away, and that crystal thing looks a lot fragiler than that impenetrable panel gateway.
