| I'm Selling Out | |

Last year at Louis Wu's birthday party, we had a random discussion about where I'd be without HBO and essentially Louis Wu. We made our respective sarcastic remarks and moved on but it was something that I actually began to contemplate on the ride back. I came to a few conclusions: Without HBO I would never have gone to that first LAN and experienced Halo multiplayer the way it was meant to be played. That LAN was a monumental experience, in the coming months I'd start visiting halo.bungie.org and become more engrossed in the game than ever. For better or for worse, this single event pretty much started me down the path to geekdom. Without HBO I would never have been able to make that harrowing drive into New York City to stay at Miguel's house so we could play competitively and get beaten badly by some 12 year olds, a foreshadowing of Halo 2. The trip(s) were a pretty new experience for me and got me into the whole comradery thing that exists in this community. Without hanging around HBO's forums I'm confident that I'd have a much smaller vocabulary and a lot less respect for the ideals that we've all come to know as the standard operating procedures of bungie.org. It's these ideals which have, on the whole, made successful my foray into supporting the community via irc.bungie.org, an experience all its own. Without HBO, I would never be out here in LA having an awesome time both tonight at Dean's LAN and yesterday at E3 and hanging out with the Bungie crew. Most importantly, without HBO I'd be getting on a plane for Hartford today and going home. However, I'm heading up to Seattle to start a new job at Bungie to fill the contract writing position. I can hardly begin to thank Claude for the amount of times he's helped me out of various predicaments or for the millions of bytes of random conversation he's, well, absorbed over the years. I really do owe him more than I can ever begin to describe given the character limit in this field, he's such an awesome friend. I also need to thank Miguel, who's been there the whole way, offering his home and brutally honest advice to a teenager he barely knew. He's one of the people that motivates me and others to make it to event after event. Both he and Claude have definitely been role models in a way over the recent years and they've been a very big part of my life. As for the Bungie gig, as I said, I'll be filling the Bungie.net content creation position. That means I'll assume many of the duties that you're used to seeing Frankie tackle. You'll still see him in them, though my presence is largely to lighten his load and free him up to do all of the cool stuff that he's involved in outside the realm of Bungie.net. I am a contracted employee, which basically means I have a contract to work there for nine months. That doesn't necessarily mean I get all the way to nine nor does it mean that after nine months I'll be back in Connecticut. Where my current roles within the Bungie.org community are concerned, they won't be changing. IBO will not be dissolved nor will I be any less prevalent therein, ksry. I don't imagine that I'll spend any less time on the forums than I do now (not that that's been much at all, lately). If anything I should have more time to dedicate to both. I do not suspect that my attitude will be changing; I won't become (more) condescending, (more of) a dick or anything like that. That's all I can really say about this right now because that's all that I know. I really look forward to this, needless to say it's a step above RadioShack and it's going to be an experience of a lifetime. I also realize that this post is entirely out of character, or at least the character that you're all used to. I should probably throw in some idle threats or some sort of angry, cynical, sarcastic remarks just to meet the quota, but really I just can't bring myself to at the moment. That said, if this one sentimental post is used as ammunition against me in the future, I will destroy you and everything that you love. KP | |
