Just thinking about it - the Forerunner Ship was powering High Charity (or partly powering, as it seems High Charity is still operational even after the Ship launched). Could the Forerunner Ship be a giant generator and the hole in the sky/ground be an opening for a conduit for the power to flow into (Just like a power plug in the wall...)?

Could the whole of Earth be the Ark? And as stated by maxthehedgie, the opening in the ground may be just a key to open up the Ark and power it?

Wouldn't you want something as valuable as the possible saviour of all living life to be inaccessible, even if someone DID have the energy, but not the key to unlock it?
