In Response To: Re: Narcogen's Great Journey write-up (Narcogen) I posted this over at Rampancy.net, but here it is again. You can do it, however, the first time takes 4 or 5 shots to take down his shields on legendary. After that it takes 3 shots each time. However, it seems that the beam rifle does little actual damage to him, so it is better to switch out to something else (I prefer either shotgun or Brute plasma rifle) and open up on him. If you do it this way, you can usually spawn the first wave of Brutes before Johnson even starts firing. Anyway, your beam rifle runs out pretty quickly, so it is really only enough to get two or three hits in on Tartarus.
