And, of course, like morons the Elites that spawn in the hallway mostly have swords and just charge him. Sometimes one will have a carbine, but usually instead of just standing next to Johnson and shooting from a safe distance there, they also jump onto the platform and last about five seconds before being pummelled into mush. Of course, if Tartarus DID use any ranged capabilities that weapon had, it'd be overbalanced. So again, the gameplay concerns have trumped the logical assumptions you'd make from the backstory here.
