In Response To: Re: The Library aint so bad (scarab)

: The Covenant were better because they were an varied ensemble of great
: characters.

: But we have lost the Grunts, Hunters, and Elites.

: Unless there is a story shakeup, the Covenant line up in H3 will be: Jackals,
: sniper Jackals, Drones, and Brutes.

You're getting ahead of me-- there's a feature in the pipes about just this question. :-)

: Jackals were an important part of the original mix but they were the least
: charismatic members.

Oh, I don't know. The whole point-and-roll thing got cute after awhile. Too bad the new ones don't do it ever.

: Sniper Jackals stop you from just leaping out of cover and mixing it up. My
: natural instinct is to be a coward and snipe from miles away, but that
: sucks the fun from the game.

I have plenty of fun doing that. Then again, Halo is an action game, not a tactical game, I suppose.

: Bungie used the Drones sparingly in Halo 2 because swarms of flying foes are
: a pita for a fps. Its impossible to target an enemy at the zenith because
: the reticle doesn't go that high. You can't see were you are going whilst
: looking that far up, so you get stuck on the geometry at the worst
: possible moments.

Now that you mention it, you have a point. I also have had problems doing that, but I figured it was just because I suck. However, I can see where this is a problem that exists because of the limitations of the interface--namely, no peripheral vision.

: I found fighting Brutes to be uninteresting. They were just buffoons.

They're interesting characters in cutscenes. They don't have as much personality in combat. The "berserking" thing I thought was used too often-- and not particularly unique anyway, as lone Hunters have a certain tendency to display similar behavior once the other in the pair has been killed. The gait of a running Brute seems also artificially uneven so as to make it difficult to hit except from a direct angle.

: Given that lineup, I would find it hard to choose between Covenant and Flood.

I agree.

: Maybe the Elite/Grunt/Hunter Faction could have their own agenda and the
: Chief could be framed for a crime he didn't commit :P.

Well, it may just be that the next bit of fighting for the Chief is against forces that haven't split yet. Perhaps Truth will prevent that from happening. I suppose there could be other Covenant races, too, but I think it's almost too late to do that-- "oh, by the way, here are some more races that you've never seen before... and weren't mentioned.. and aren't on the murals". At some point you've got to go with what you have. If Bungie all of a sudden brought back the Forerunners in a massive and powerful ship, have them pop their heads out and say "sorry, just popped down to the store for a bit" and then set everything right, we'd feel pretty cheated. So I think the idea of a major new element like a new race or races being brought in is pretty low.

: Then you have to fight various combinations of: Flood, Covenant, Faction, and
: Humans. :)

Heh. Well, that angle seems suppressed in the games. There's far more enmity between the Chief and other humans in the novels, for instance.

: Now that would be fun.

I'd love to see a Covenant campaign mod for Halo. Except that I don't have a PC or play HCE. But something like the Myth mod where you play as the Dark would be pretty fun.

It seems to me, though, that Bungie went out of the way to ensure you are never shooting humans in the game-- even when you're the Arbiter, your only targets are Flood or other Covenant, and never humans. So I don't think they're ever going to do it.
