All it takes is one point defense laser to hit the Orbital MAC, and you've just disabled or destroyed it. We know the point defense systems are easily capable of multitasking and are highly accurate, which makes them the perfect weapons to use in this scenario. I find it incredibly unlikely the Covenant wouldn't have a single point defense turret able to fire at the Cairo. There's almost no risk involved in tasking a point defense laser with the job of shooting the Cairo. It's not like Regret's Carrier has anything to worry about. The worst case scenario would be some missiles getting through and hitting Regret's hull, disabling a hangar or weapon system. The trade off here is more than worth it. Not to mention that if as you say, there are many human ships distracting Regret's Carrier, how in the hell does it make it down to Earth in one piece?
