Miranda did say she was going to look for a way through the shield. My guess is, she found a way in that didn't involve getting pasted and neemed by Sentinels (considering that the Foerunner structures are very acommodating to humans) and as they were moving inside, whoops, someone flipped the wrong switch and fubar'd everything.

Either that, or as I've proposed a long time before, the UNSC was already on Delta Halo when everyone arrived....
