I only like the LOTR movies because my old friend (actually, everyone's friend) Brian Morden did. Otherwise, keep the following in mind... You see, It's all a matter of taste. As you know, Tolkien's work is madly popular, and this leads to people forcing themselves to like something that they may not have been so acceptive of had it not been so well-liked by others. But, let me tell you now, a rather seriously held opinion of mine. *Ahem*, JRR Tolkien's work is some of the most yawn-inducing, meandering, hopeless fiction I've ever had the misfortune of reading. I picked up one of his books, once, and immediately set it back down. How could I possibly get myself in the mood to read such a thing without being under the influence of roughly a gallon of Chamomile tea? The LOTR movies were fine, though. I suppose. I guess they did more to convey the visuals of the series than any book could. Honestly, I think it's time people stood up for the "New Classics", defending them against all those ignorant fools who'd dare to say that they're anywhere NEAR "mediocre". Since when was the Halo book trilogy "mediocre?" Why, just look at the reviews on Amazon.com! It seems that they are universally liked, by those who seem qualified to judge them. I'm sick of decades-old, weighty prose holding down what could've been an absolute sensation had people simply opened their minds. I'm not only referring to the Halo book series. There were a number of "Ignored works" in the nineties. Works that people continued to compare to things from the fifties. Well, I think it's time to put the old classics to rest and look for "New Classics". The Harry Potter series is a good candidate, if it's fantasy you're after. But bear in mind that I'm no fan of that series either. In fact, I've harshly criticized it before due to its ridiculous academic setting and stale atmosphere. Instead, I'm into Sci-Fi, which Dagorath has no business comparing Tolkien to. The style in which novels are made has seen a paradigm shift over the years. Get used to it. -*THASF* |
