*OT* The Library: the best Halo level
Posted By: Doug Auclair <dauclair@hotmail.com>Date: 6/5/05 3:32 p.m.

Dear all,

Jillybean posted the following on the story page:

"Asides from having a very odd taste in levels, he has some good points.

Gregory Prill (gregoryprill317@hotmail.com) writes:

I was thinking, after playing through my favorite level, the library, last night [...]"

Gregory, thanks for coming forward, stepping up to the plate and swinging away!

So, I have no idea why Jillybean's (and many others on this forum and elsewhere) backhanded remark is disparaging toward the "Library" level! There are so many ways to play this level: one can stand and deliver or run past nearly every enemy without firing a shot (I think HBO has a vid of someone doing the entire level by using only a single grenade), or do a bit of both a la run and gun; this level even allows Sam Fishering past a set of patrolling flood (343 GS: "Let me lock your sorry self in this enclosed chamber so I can watch wave after wave of flood pummel you to MC burgers") -- one can back into one of the two secluded corners of the chamber, and, in most cases, the flood will wander about aimlessly for awhile until the far door opens up.

And, watching the GNF videos has shown me that there are even more ways to play this level.

A close second is the "343 GS" level, I suppose, or "Keyes", or "T&R" (I just found a new megabattle there that I'll be sharing with Rockslider), or ... well, that's the beauty of this game: each level is a work of art and thoroughly entertaining in its own way.

But, consider this, who needs to buy Doom3 for 50USD, when you get that entire game on just one level of Halo (well, actually, "The Library" is arguably much better than Doom3, because the Library has everything Doom3 does, but it also has a back story that's generated years of speculation from the community)? What better way to unwind than to know that one does not need to discriminate: every moving biological object (that isn't talking to you) is a enemy (one time, the freaked out marine did kill me with a spot-on headshot -- that was embarrassing)? And, knowing that, and armed with the shotgun and the Halo superweapon (the needler), what better way to blow off some steam after a hard day at work that to vaporise a warrior form with the shotgun up-close-and-personal-like or to needle-spike-BOOM (I love those cascading explosions from the needler ... it's especially helpful if there are 50 or so 'nades lying about from fallen comrades) a floodie "thinking" it's all that because it eliminated your coplay partner with a rocket launcher from across one of the long corridors? Or, the ultimate, what better way to play this game than to jump onto the world's biggest elevator just as 57 enemies jump down to the corridor behind you? ... It helps their collective egos a bit to wave and to smile down at them as they make a fruitless charge toward you as the elevator ascends.

So, I put it out to you, Halo community: the "Library" certainly is the best Halo level in my book. Agree? If not, what's your favorite level and why?

Also, I'm not excluding H2 (although I'm now getting close to logging more hours to the game within a game: IWHBYD skull hunt (my favorite variant: mano-i-mano swords only) than actually playing the H2 campaign straight-up). If your favorite level is on H2, do tell!

Sincerely,
Doug Auclair
