Where does this idea of a "core" worm come from? is it cannon or spec? if cannon, where from?

A online buddy of mine(a marathon fan that goes by the handle Mjolinr) had an idea about this that I found very interesting. It is quite possible that there are large animals on the Lekgolo homeworld that have hard, rigid exoskeleton. A Lekgolo would kill one of theses, and use it's exoskeleton as armor, probably eating the contents at the same time. When this armor begins to get old and battered they move into a new one. This would also explain them traveling in pairs, as the process of changing armor would leave them quite vulnerable, and their bond mate would keep guard of them while they did it.
i which case a hunter is, in his words "Kind of a souped up, colonial hermit crab critter."
I think this idea makes a lot of sense, and could very well be true. Anyone care to poke some holes in it?
