I guess it makes sense, and after watching it again, I agree. First of all, it is the only thing of its kind among the wreckage. If it were part of the wreckage one would expect to see more among the wreckage.

Also, if you think about it, it is definitely to Gravemind's advantage to retrieve the index, as he can then prevent the Halo from being activated.
