In Response To: Re: In Amber Clad loadout discussion (sh33p) The crew for the ships can't be too high, simply because of food and Oxygen requirements. Of course that is the reason for the cryo-tubes during long voyages, but when a ship is just sitting in orbit there is a lot of oxygen being used up. Now they probably have a way of resupplying the oxygen and food, but think about the size of the facilities that would be needed for this. Your talking about a quarter of the ship dedicated to just supplying the crewmen, another quarter to the crew living spaces, a quarter to weapons (Launching systems , reloading systems, storage facility for MAC rounds and Archer missiles), another quarter to the engine and reactor. That leaves you with nothing, no room for large hangars and other facilities. The crew must be fairly small, as in nobody operating the Archer launchers, minimal cryo-bay team (10), maybe a engineer group of about 40, a maintenence crew of about 50 (at most), a bridge crew of 30-40, a marine contingent of 200, flight crew of 150 (including repair and loading personnel as well as pilots and crewmen) This would be the most a total personnel loadout of about 500. Anymore would be too high for a ship that size- this isnt a cruiser like the PoA, its a Frigate (At most half the size of the PoA) comparison: US Ticonderoga Light Cruiser
PoA Light Cruiser
however, we're talking about more advanced systems, and also as a result much larger engines and reactors. The PoA is probably half reactor and engine complex, so now we're down to 1,900 crewmen that could fit in. Cut down further with the fact that the PoA can only resupply at major planets with shipyards or drydocks, (resupply by pelicans would be way too inefficient - and unlike today's earth, it is unlikely that there are many ports that could handle the Pillar of Autumn - i doubt it is capable of entering the atmosphere and still be able to get off like IAC) the ship will need a lot of space for storage, maybe half of what remains, so now your down to 950. That would be a maximal amount for the ship. IAC could hold more because it is smaller and capable of atmospheric flight, so it'd be much easier to resupply at small outposts. But since it apparently has equal if not larger marine forces and support group, it will need those freed up storage facilities for the tanks, pelicans, fuel tanks, ammunition, (for ground vehicles and aircraft) and soldier equipment |
