In Response To: Re: Very good thoughts... (58)
: Mm, but you're assuming that Humans are the only Sentient race on Earth,
: which is, please accept my apologise, a stupid thing to think. Now, since
: we can't really get inside the Mind and see if something is Sentient,
: since we still only kinda know where the Mind is, we cannot make that
: assumption, but we can make some assumptions based on what we know about
: ourselves. In situations of fear or panic, Humans resort to the
: Fight-Or-Flight response, as do all other known creatures on the face of
: the Earth. Humans are not the only species to use tools or technology, and
: we are also not the only ones to create communities. I believe Sentience
: can be defined by Music. In my theory, all Sentient species will react in
: a calm, happy manner towards music, and anything that does not is Varelse,
: to borrow a term from Orson Scott Card. Now, I don't think you can do this
: with Punk Rock or Heavy Metal... But things like soft music, like
: classical and such, has a calming effect on not only us, but other
: species. Play some Beethoven in front of your Cat, they'll go right to
: sleep. ^^ Now, I suppose it's possible that this virus infected ALL life
: on Earth...It seems as though all of the planets we reside on in five
: hundred years have been Terraformed, and I assume that we brought the
: animals to them...I'll have to keep this virus theory in mind, as it is
: especially well thought-out and fun to play with.
Heh, don't get me wrong, I swear that my cat is plotting to kill me while she purrs- I'm strongly opposed to the thought that humans are the only sentients on Earth.
It's just that the Forerunner virus wouldn't have infected any sentient life form that it encountered; it would need some sort of stimuli to indicate that given race was the worthiest. The virus could rule out many sentients merely by their basic survivability- Homo Erectus was the cream of the crop at the time... sentient, pack-mentality, opposible thumbs, tool innovation... I would probably deem the discovery of creating fire, or tools, or something along those lines to be the stimuli that the virus were waiting for... more likely, the brainwaves sent out by said humans (I'm not an expert on that theory, but I'm assuming that that's how the Flood identify sentient species worth assimilating). I wouldn't mind delving more into this subject.
