yea railguns are pretty simple gagets. Makeing a powerfull one...thats a diffrent story :-D

However i belive nasa uses magnetic railguns to shoot metal projectiles at surfaces to study the effects of asteroid impacts on new materials. I belive they get about 28,000mph out of the barrel on that sucker. there projectiles are quite small.

Suprisingly nasa has made materials that resist that impact without too much damage. The scarry part? The matierals nasa made were incredibly thin and mostly filled with presurized air.
