The thing you have to remember is that at some point in the development process of every game, reality sets in and certain things have to go for one reason or another. This is nothing new. I’ve watched it happen to every game we’ve shipped over the last five years and while my initial reaction is always "Awww…" in the end I’ve never felt that the stuff we took out was noticeably absent from the game. (Well, okay, multiplayer in Oni is the one exception.) You guys should have seen Jason’s initial idea of what Marathon 2 would be like. We have a wall of Stuff To Do; tasks are noted on index cards tacked up in order of relative importance. Recently a bunch of stuff moved to the part of the wall that represents Stuff That Would Be Cool But Only If We Have Time. I looked at it five minutes ago and saw a lot of stuff that we could afford to lose; certain creatures, models, etc. A few chocolate chips don’t make it into the cookie; we save them for the next one. It’s part of the creative process, and if anything proves that we’re moving ahead rather than stagnating. But hey, what do I know? I just work here. To give you a little perspective I’d like to quote my friend Rob McLees. Rob is one of those Halo team artists who are so uniformly miserable and distraught, or so I hear. Covering his abject misery with a veneer of calm and good humor, Rob responded with a great line when I asked him how he felt about Halo’s current state, and I knew immediately I had to share it with you all: "Halo in its current form takes the old stuff that everyone was so impressed with and holds its head under the filthy waters of a public men’s room toilet." He went on at length, giving examples of things that are already much improved and will be even better by the time we ship. He used the word "exciting." And when I asked if Halo would still outclass (my actual words were "stomp the s**t out of") its competition when we release it he answered with an unequivocal "Yes." Make of it what you will. -Matt
