(I assume that you mean by this to have plot elements occur after the player has played for a certain time, not after he has reached a certain place or done a certain thing)

This also raises the problem of making the plot interactive. The game cannot assume anything about the world, since the player might not have gotten there yet, so it would have to be disconnected from his actions. This would pretty much kill the concept of being sent on missions, a staple of any story-oriented action game, and raise all sorts of consistency issues since the game and story are now in effect 2 different objects.

A time-dependent storyline might work for a fully nonlinear game like Escape Velocity, but I don't think it would work a game in which the player is an integral part of the plot.
