The use of phrases like "continuous levels" and "no breaks in gameplay".

Traditional games "track" by having levels with exactly 2 doors to the outside world: The one by which you came in, which is permanently sealed, and the one by which you will leave. Halo doesn't have to be like that... The obstacles could be more along the lines of "You don't have enough firepower for that route to be an option" or "You have to find a boat or an airplane before you cross the river." The difference between this and a traditional game would be (theoretically) that if you were a sufficiently skilled tactician or vidmaster or were willing to swim for 10 minutes or already had access to an air or water vehicle you could take the nonstandard route if you wanted to. Careful design would lead to the player arriving at the same story points in the same sequence each time.
