The first thing you have to understand is that we never announced a PS2 Halo. We didn't announce one because we weren't developing one. A couple magazines and web sites reported a PS2 Halo was "confirmed" but that was bollocks (which is becoming synonymous with modern American journalism, especially in the game industry, but that's a rant for another day).

Our plan, inasmuch as we had one, was to create another internal team to handle console ports. At the time we figured they would concentrate on the PS2.

Obviously, things changed.

The second thing you need to understand is that XBox is the console we want to develop for. Yes, it is positioned to compete directly with the PS2, and we would probably have a hell of a time convincing Microsoft to publish a PS2 title, but that's not going to be an issue because we decided long before this deal was inked that XBox is the console we wanted to concentrate on. The hardware itself excites the development teams, and the relationship Microsoft has with developers and the sheer amount of cash they bring to the table means that XBox will be well-supported and well-marketed. It may or may not dominate the market, but we think it will do well enough to justify developing for it.

My third and final point: there is always a Plan B. Consider the worst-case scenario (from Microsoft's point of view). Imagine that the vindictive curses of the doomsayers come true and the XBox becomes the first console casualty of the 21st century, a la the Atari Jaguar. If that happened, and Microsoft felt they could sell games but not consoles, there would be a very obvious path for them (and us) to take.
