In Response To: Spear to Plasma (Walshicus) (posted by me) ...I suppose that counts as evidence, of a sort... ...if only of the Bungie sense of humour. What little sense I can make of the deliberately obscure hieroglyphic text (I had to try, though I'm sure it's been done before), strongly suggests that the writer is having fun at our expense. Anyway, back to the tablets, specifically to the 'eye' symbol. I have to say that I'm not convinced by the 'Eye of Ra' theory (that symbol occurs several times on the wallpaper image, so you can easily judge the resemblance for yourself). The Egyptians used quite a few variants of the eye symbol, with different meanings, but nothing in my hieroglyphic dictionary bears much of a resemblance to this. After reviewing some cutscene video, I'd say that to me it looks more like a Prophet's eye than anything else, so my my best guess as to its meaning is... Prophecy (cue anguished groans, readers pelt their screens with rotten fruit and vegetables, OldNick ducks). The dreadful pun is unavoidable, and quite possibly significant. The Bungie sense of humour strikes again... maybe. (posted by Walshicus)
I feel a little guilty quibbling with Walshicus after he's put in all this work, but I'd like to point out that tablet 4 is the last one which shows an Elite carrying a spear (in fact the last one before #7 that shows an Elite at all). I think we can probably all agree that the spear-sword switch occurs as a result of the event depicted in tablet 4. |
