Replying to myself, I think those symbols might be starships (an earlier Covenant design?). Note the 'sparks' around each one, and compare with the 'sparks' around the central flame/sword symbol. I think the artist is trying to convey the idea that these two very different-looking items have something in common. If I'm right, the significance is that the Prophets' newfound mastery of Forerunner power-generation technology let them build better spaceships. This does raise a further question. The chronological order of the panels implies that the Prophets have encountered (and enlisted or subjugated) seven other species by this time. Eight sentient species on one planet? Highly unlikely (unless they had been transplanted there, which is another line of speculation in itself). In one stellar system? This still seems unlikely. So presumably they had at least one working starship before this point. Maybe they used surviving Forerunner ships, like the one at the core of High Charity, exclusively up to this point, but this discovery let them build their own starships for the first time. That would certainly be a significant event, marking a new epoch in the history of the Covenant. | |
