Good call. Agreed here. Looks like the time between our spear wielding-days, and the days of energy weapons was completely skipped by the Covies. Technology, thus, is the product of Gods, and not worthy of lesser "creatures" to use. We likely possess technology that never existed for them, and perhaps that's something they find offensive. Imagine the Brits in the 1800's finding a tribe in Micronesia with repeat-fire crossbows. I think they'd probably be offended in a sense even though their own technology surpassed it, only because it was something they'd never conceived of and likely would just wipe the race out and call it's stuff "quaint."

My thinking as well. Living repair bots, basically. Their behavior in "First Strike" suggests this.

They do, I believe. But the pattern of thumbs book-ending two-four fingers is still compatible. Sort of like if we had tech from a three-fingered race. We could bunch up the index and middle, and the pinky and ring, and still awkwardly hold their stuff. And, more relevant to the discussion at hand, a three fingered creature could hold one of our guns properly with little adjustment.

I disagree that they armed the race before reining them in. I think what they encountered was brutishly deadly in its natural form, sans Covie-tech, but after subduing the creatures, they were augmented to be Covie-level bruisers. I'm imagining that since they're called "Hunters," they likely were carnivorous and aggressive, but still akin to early man before clothing and stone-age tech: still dangerous and intelligent, but well below their potential as warriors.

Further, I got to thinking...why have that weak spot in the back? I'm thinking the armor was made for them by the Elites/Prophets and the weakness was built in, just in case they ever did want to turn on their benefactors with their newfound strength.
