In Response To: Re: Familiar plants around Delta Halo control room (Grady)

: Now you've got me looking for more information...

: Northwest Trees (The Mountaineers, 1977, ISBN 0-916890-50-3) says the
: western red cedar was "the most valuable tree known to the Indians of
: the Northwest Coast." It's also the major source for cedar shakes and
: siding for houses; its wood is extremely long-lasting and decay-resistant
: (due to a natural fungicide), and a cedar roof can last 100 years. It
: grows best in a cool, wet climate, and seedlings can be killed by the heat
: from strong sunlight; even adult trees are easily damaged by fire. It's
: also known as arborvitae (tree of life). Oh, and the coverage of western
: red cedar in this book starts on page 117. ;)

Thanks for posting that; here are a couple of interpretations I got from reading that.

It seems to me that that are two interpretations that you take from this paragraph. For instance, the description "its wood is extremely long-lasting and decay-resistant (due to a natural fungicide), and a cedar roof can last 100 years" could indicate this wood was somehow used to protect the people guarding the control room, by slowing down the decay of the body which the Flood first does to gain control of it's host. If this was done, they could call for help, and someone else would come along and stop the Flood gaining control of the index. We know "the Index must not fall into the hands of the Flood" so it's possible that the Forerunner set up several protective measures against the Flood. The fact "it's also known as arborvitae (tree of life)" seems to further support this line of argument

The next interpretation could be that it's describing the Flood. Reading further into the paragraph, the fact "it grows best in a cool, wet climate, and seedlings can be killed by the heat from strong sunlight" indicates it could be a description of the Flood. Remember when 343GS said, "your environment suit should serve you well when the Flood begins to alter the atmosphere", well in Halo 1, we did not fight the Flood in the sunlight, can't remember about Halo 2 though, it was all indoors, so we know they are not the biggest fans of sunlight, supporting the fact they grow best in “a cool, wet climate”, and they were released in the swamp, which is also a cool wet place.

So there you have two Halo interpretations on the information you gave. To be honest neither explanation is fully supportive of one theory.

In theory you could argue that "its wood is extremely long-lasting and decay-resistant” could indicate it was used by the Flood to slow down the decaying of current hosts, and dead potential hosts, therefore, they were able to live longer.
You could then rightly ask, why would the Forerunner grow plants that would help the Flood so much, next to such an important place of Halo? An answer to this question could be, that it was Gravemind who planted these plants, and that is why he has been able to live so long, because he is able to use these plants to make his victims last longer. To be honest, a Flood that size has got to need a lot of hosts, or something that will make him last, without having to obtain hosts all the time.

Alternatively, you could argue that it is referring to both theories. To begin with you could say that the Forerunner used it protect themselves for a bit longer, and hope reinforcements would arrive, or use it before they were infected, so when they were finally infected, the Flood had a tough job of breaking them down so quick. You could then say that Gravemind got a Forerunner, used them as a host and then obtained this information, and acted on this new information to live longer. Of course, for this interpretation to work, then Gravemind would have had to have been around before the Forerunner fired the Halo's. However, you could get around this problem; by saying there were more Forerunners, that weren't inside the blast radii when the Halo's fired. but came back to fight Gravemind and failed. Alternatively, you could argue, and to be honest it would be a more plausible argument, that he simply obtained the information from 2401 penitent tangent and then used the information at his leisure.

Ah well, just something to think about.
