Now you've got me looking for more information...

Northwest Trees (The Mountaineers, 1977, ISBN 0-916890-50-3) says the western red cedar was "the most valuable tree known to the Indians of the Northwest Coast." It's also the major source for cedar shakes and siding for houses; its wood is extremely long-lasting and decay-resistant (due to a natural fungicide), and a cedar roof can last 100 years. It grows best in a cool, wet climate, and seedlings can be killed by the heat from strong sunlight; even adult trees are easily damaged by fire. It's also known as arborvitae (tree of life). Oh, and the coverage of western red cedar in this book starts on page 117. ;)

Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast (Lone Pine Publishing, 1994, ISBN 1-55105-040-4) says the red cedar has been called "the cornerstone of northwest Indian culture," and large-scale use of the tree "delineates the boundary of the northwest coast peoples." The Indians used all the parts of the tree, and rarely felled one, instead splitting planks out of the cedar while it was still standing. "The power of the redcedar tree was said to be so strong that a person could receive strength by standing with his or her back to the tree." It was called the "tree of life" by the Indians as well as the Europeans, and Coast Salish myth says the cedar was created in honor of a man who was always helping others. Besides being used to make a wide variety of items for daily life, it was also used for medicine. The western red cedar is British Columbia's provincial tree.

So ... what can we extract from this data dump? It's a tree associated with strength, life, and helping others. This is juxtaposed with the area where it grows in Halo 2, near the control room, a place from which one can destroy life and harm others. Interesting... Alternately, since the tree was supposed to have been created in honor of a good man, could it be a sort of memorial for the Forerunners?

Oh, and has anyone noticed anything unusual in the game when standing with their back against one of these trees? ;)
