Reading about the descriptions of a few of them, and a lot have link with early Americans, something that Bungie has referred to in the past. Also I would doubt if they were just put there just because they were outside the window, as I remember a Bungie employee in interview saying everything is there for a purpose, and I wouldn't say just being there for the sake of it, or to make the scenery look good. To back up my theory, the quote "The western red cedar has been called "the cornerstone of Northwest Coast aboriginal culture," and has great spiritual significance" implies that there is more to this than just pretty pictures.
