In Response To: Spec Thoughts Part I: The Crisis of the Sangheili (Marius Hamilton)
This is a really well thought out piece but a few small things that I disagree with.
For one I'm not so sure that the unngoy and uhh...hunters will actually seriously (as in large numbers) leave the rebel-elites. The way I see it is that while the prophets were the spiritual leaders of the covennat, it is the elites who hold lot of military power. I think many grunts and hunters feel respect for the elites more than any other covenant race because it is the gold-armoured elites that have lead the covenant to victory to victory with the excpetion of Halo. I think a lot of the covenant was held together by the military might that the elites represented.
Yes, some races quickly transfered that respect to the brutes but now that the hunters and grunts have broken away from the propets, I see no reason why they won't continue to follow the elites.
As for the Arbiter's position within the ranks of Elites, it is a bit confusing. He seems at once to hold both more and less power than his previous role as a commander. Assuming that an Arbiter is the prophets most powerful/honoured role; than to see the Arbiter rebel against the prophets may lend a lot of support to his cause.
I think the main reason that the prophets purged, as you so appropiatly put it, the elites is the power they held over the "lesser" races.
Also in the little booklet, "conversations around the universe"(or something along those lines) there is a conversation between two elites about their respect towards the humans, if this is an attitude regarded by many elites than I can imagine the elites would be more than willing to invite/ally the humans into their rebel group, they could do with the allies.
