however for anyone who has read the books, their were a lot of things the humans did not know the covenent had. the master chief hadn't even seen an elite for the first time untill the battle of reach. the first he met a brute was on the unwielding elephat thing which was after halo. I say this was the first time they ever saw it. as so as it was first seen all info they could gather was sent to HQ and they quickly ran some simulation tests. that or it had been seen very very recently like on the last planet the covies had attacked before earth.
