In Response To: My Thursday morning BBQ (just add flames) *long (Ducain) The best way I can describe Halo 2's story is to describe it in a Star Wars analogy. Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope is roughly analogous to Halo. Episode IV pits the small rebel alliance against a space station of unimagineable destructive power. The rebels triumph against all odds. While Halo certainly shares story elements with Episode IV, that is not why I compare the two. Rather I compare the two in terms of their sequels. The Empire Strikes Back, in most people's eyes, is the best movie of the original trilogy. Return of the Jedi is viewed as a sort of rehash of A New Hope. The rebels are once again up against a space station of unimagineable destructive power. The rebels once again triumph against all odds. While RotJ is a good movie, most believe it wasn't what it could have been. The first two movies established this incredibly rich universe with so many stories to be told and yet. And yet Return of the Jedi is a redux of A New Hope. Sadly, the same is true of Halo 2. I once again start out defending a space station/capital ship against boarding parties. I once again stage an assault on the control room/ prophet. I once again do battle with the flood as I curse at how "unenjoyable" it is to do so. I once again wander through the Library cursing it's repitious environment. I once again battle to save Sgt. Johnson/Keyes/Keyes' Daughter. Halo 2 begins on Earth. All the press releases leading up to Halo 2's release were saying "Earth will never be the same." It seemed like this game was going to be about saving Earth. At the end of the third Halo book, First Strike, it is discovered that the Covenant have discovered Earth's location and are planning on attack with a massive force (500 ships). All the videos and commercials are about saving Earth. Reading the books, it's obvious that while the Master Chief never loses a battle on the ground, the Covenant are nearly unstoppable in space. Master Chief can kill as many ground forces as he wants. The Covenant can just "glass the planet" (fire plasma and burn up the earth). So I was greatly anticipating this battle. How could Earth survive? How could the Master win? I'll never know. After one battle on the surface we are wisked away to another Halo ring. Who knows where this is. For all the player knows, Earth could be well outside this ring's destructive range. In which case, the 5/8ths of the game is pointless. Let the Covenant blow themselves up with their Great Journey. But assuming Earth is still at risk, we proceed. The rest of the game takes place on Delta Halo and it's surroundings (which is troubling since Delta refers to four, but this is installation 05 while the previous ring was 04). I was greatly disappointed to leave Earth. Everything had me cued up to save it and yet I do not know her fate. Worse yet I return to another Halo (again). Again the flood are unleashed. Let me say this much: fighting the flood is not enjoyable. I am not alone in this. Every other person I know who has played the single player *hates* fighting against the flood. Even in the book, Master Chief thinks to himself that he hates fighting the flood much more than fighting the Covenant. When my buddies and I do co-op sessions we have a strict rule that we do not play levels the flood are on. We play Assault on the Control or The Silent Cartographer. The reason? There is a tremendous satsifaction that comes with taking down a squad of elites. Shotgunning flood while wandering around in the dark is simply not enjoyable. So that was another detractor of the game. If they were going to bring back the flood, then only one thing could redeem that: destroying 343 Guilty Spark in actual gameplay. I hate that "Oracle" so much. And so I plodded through the game, enjoying the gameplay (on the non-flood components), but growing more and more weary with the story. Playing as an Elite was never something I wanted to do. I've grown attached to Master Chief's story. Not some Elite's who wears extremely outdated armor. I'm glad the game developers stopped the Elite campaign before forcing the player to shoot humans. I'm pretty sure I would have hung up the campaign at that point. So my overall impressions of the game: It's Halo 1 with a few new guns, a few new enemies and a few new abilities. I'm sure I'll get many hours of co-op enjoyment, but I'll definitely be spending the bulk of my time on Live rather than on Campaign. I can't wait til Halo 3 and the real story, Master Chief's story of how he saves Earth.
