Whoa there, sparky!

In Response To: Subtle Clue or Rorschach Test? (Socrates)

: In view of the latter possibility mentioned in the subject line, I should
: point out that the entire panel is symmetrical along the vertical axis,
: and while the artists at Bungie probably didn't fold over a painted piece
: of canvas or paper to obtain their control panel designs, it does suggest
: that we may all be reading a bit too much into this texture.

exactly... I still think the "hand" looks more like one of those 'ships' that you get to pilot in early sci-fi video games (space invaders-esque).

: I include myself in that statement, especially in light of the following: I
: see a heart in the upper corners, with an pointer arrow at the tip of the
: heart, pointing to what looks to me like the fletchings on the safe end of
: an older "hunting" arrow.

Yeah, i wondered about that too. If i remember the animation sequence, when you hold X, the heart-fletchings slide in -- like locks retracting from a safe door. Perhaps if the "hand" icon rotated like a spinny- handle of a vault door during the animation, I'd be able to see the figure as intended as a hand. (right now I don't buy that interpretation. the whole rectangular figure is symmetric about the central vertical axis. having a central button to push just makes sense.)

Though, still... How significant is this really? **If** it is a hand / overlapping hands (which I very much doubt) what does it tell us about halo / the forerunner?
a) the forerunner (or whoever the forerunner intended to activate this part of this halo) had fingers, and therefore limbs, and therefore bodies
b) this part of this halo was meant to be operated by someone with fingers that was tough enough to get past the robot guard.

um... big deal? I don't think so.

the "forerunner != human" uproar is premature (generalizing from 1 fuzzy data point that might not even be actual data but a mirage? please!) and it fails to account for the MC's apparent instinctive knowledge of forerunner controls on the first halo (go read the books). Based on the Monitors' recognition of humans (MC in particular) as "Reclaimers" and calling of the covenant "meddlers", I think there is a connection between the humans and the forerunner.
Are we descendents?
Were we engineered to replace the forerunner eventually? (ie, they knew they were gonna go extinct and wanted to make sure something in the galaxy could eventually take over for them and play with their toys... if need be)
Were we a client / vassal race?

Does the answer to the above 3 questions matter? My inclination is to say... not yet. We don't know enough. Go think about something else. Come back to this when Halo 3 comes out. ;-)
