In Response To: My Thursday morning BBQ (just add flames) *long (Ducain)
: I'm gonna give you a few of my thoughts about Halo 2, half expecting (and
: maybe even wanting) you to flame me to cinders and tell me that I'm crazy.
: I also know that this isn't going to get me invited over for tea anytime
: soon, but hey- this is a Halo discussion forum after all. ;)
: The thing that hooked me on the first Halo was the campaign gameplay. I
: really cannot guess how many times I've played that game all the way
: through. Even today, it's still a blast. And, since I'm not really much of
: a 'gamer' (Halo was my very first console experience), it's difficult for
: me to nail down what parts of the game make it so great. All I know is
: that for a couple of years I've enjoyed the heck out that thing.
: I've tried to 'step back' and give the game a once over from the standpoint
: of someone who isn't a Halo fanatic that runs a website for Halo
: fanatics.
: Here's a few thoughts from a guy who simply loves Halo: First , to me at
: least, this entire game (I'm talking storyline here) seems like an
: unecessary parenthesis in the whole story. If you've played the first
: Halo, and you've read the Halo novels, it seems like it would be no
: problem at all to simply jump right to Halo 3 and forget that this game
: ever existed. There were very few revelations in this storyline, and it
: seems like the game ends precisely where I thought it was going to
: begin .
: I didn't have to try to like the Halo 1 storyline. It just grabbed me. This
: time around it's simply not the case. It's not that I have any real
: problem with the story, it's just that I think it's unecessary. When the
: game was coming to a close (you don't know that at the time), my brother
: and I thought, "Alright, we're finally gonna go to earth and kick
: some alien bootius maximus. Then the credits rolled.
: I'll be honest, my gut react was: anger, and dissappointment. Ya, it's just a
: game, blah blah. But remember we're talking about a game that thousands of
: people lined up for, shivering in the middle of the night for the chance
: to play before anyone else.
: Secondly , the desire to mess with the game engine (tricks), grew out of
: my love for the campaign as well. This time around, it seems that Bungie
: created a 'trixster's paradise' without the benefit of a well fleshed-out
: campaign story. I didn't start tricking Halo 1 for a year and a half,
: after I had played the game through countless times on Legendary. At that
: point, I decided to try some of this cool 'trick' stuff.
: This game seems to be chock full of skulls, eggs, easily escapeable
: boundaries, warthog launching made so easy that my three year old could do
: it, sword flying, and...
: ...ya.
: However, Halo 2 truly does not have the same replay value for me. I want it
: to , but it just doesn't. Even when I do have some free time, which has
: been kinda rare lately, I find myself thinking about cranking up the Halo
: box, and then thinking, "Na."
: And this is me!!! Ducain!!??&*^%$!!!! You know, the guy who spent 5 hours
: killing flood to steal a stupid banshee in The Maw!!??
: I feel like I need to go to a support group, lol. ;)
: After playing Halo 2 all the way through, I'm just not drawn in. I find
: myself wanting to fire up Halo 1 and do a nice runthrough of T&R on
: Legendary for fun's sake.
: *************************************************
: I have SO much more to say, such as specifics about why I think the gameplay
: in Halo 2 is less fun than Halo 1, but I think I've said plenty enough
: already to get the Benedict Arnold treatment from the community, so I'm
: just gonna wrap this up.
: Let me just say that the game is good- I liked it. But, it's not a game that
: I could spend countless hours playing through again and again. Sry. What's
: my point in all this? Well, I guess just to vent. I don't do it very much,
: so this'll probably do me for a few years.
: Oh yeah! XBL on Halo 2 absolutely ROCKS!!!! I mean, WOW! That's probably
: going to be where my true enjoyment of this game occurs.
: In addition, I enjoy the Halo community every bit as much (if not more) that
: the games themselves, so I plan on continuing to be annoyingly involved,
: no matter my immediate feelings about the new game.
: ********************************************************
: I think the crux of the matter (boy doesn't that sound intelligent), is that
: I was actually standing in line on November the 9th, waiting to pick up
: what I now realize will be Halo 3.
: I just got the wrong game, lol. ;)
: *Ducain waits for the healing flame to bathe his soul, cleansing him from the
: sin of doubting the Halo gods.*

I am deeply in love with this game called Halo 2...but i must say...I think your right Ducain. I find myself with the same feelings of wanting to pop in Halo 1 and just playing to my hearts content. At first release of this game...i found my self defending this game with all i had...mainly because i didnt want it to be true...i didnt want the game ive waited for for 3 years to be a bomb. I still dont think its a bomb...like you said...the storyline is an unnecessary parenthesis...but an interesting one yet. And its also i think harder to make a sequel...because with a sequel...people look back at the first one...and they say...this thing is better but this isnt. You see what im saying? Thanks.
