: 8) : JH < I don't agree with you. I, for one, think Halo2 is a great game. I have before thought it was crap - the first time I saw the credits role, I felt like I had been cheated. But then I awared myself to it's real glory: My expectations. See, I am a man for danger - when I get on the line, I push myself to fight for glory. I'm not talking glory in the sense of ego enlargement - I always push myself beyond that, to a place where even I don't believe I just did ____. I admire people who do so, and I believe this is what happened with Halo2. Bungie already had a large ego, so-to-speak; they had made the single best game in the millenia, quality-wise. They took a small game and created a universe, not just of story, but a community that 5 million people are a part of (a great number of which seem to be posting now... :) and knows no borders. Without this worldwide ring, I wouldn't know some of the people that I do, and I value knowing people infinitely more than any game. (Do I love what brought us together in the name of carnage? Yes, but the people are still paramount.) Bungie had all this. They didn't need to make Halo2 anything but Halo on Earth. Many times they have said "If we don't like it, they won't like it" (affect, not verbatim) I guess it worked for the 70 or so that work there, because it's obvious that some don't like it. They didn't try to go for a game to make themselves more cash, but a detailed experience that took them to a place in their own own disbelief. Being my kind of people they sat down and asked each other "What do we expect, and how can we blow our said expectations out of the water?" Bungie pushed the envelope, and their expectations ceased to exist when they saw the credits, so did mine and yours. You said it yourself! Bungie did this in order to make a better game - they were venturing out into uncharted territory for FPS's; how do you make your product better when you have the best product of it's kind? They took this gambit for our enjoyment, and it sounds like some people think they came up short, and maybe they did. But the fact still remains that my expectations for Halo2 died a gruesome death by the weighty campaign that I experienced. I enjoyed the gamble, because they did gamble, and we got an incredible game because of it. Scratch that, two incredible games because of it (I'm preemptively counting Halo3 as part of that purse). Tangent: I've built an expectation list for Halo3. I don't care to share them, I personally find those lists annoying, but they exist nonetheless. You probably have too, as far as the story goes. Anyway, I have created this illustration to help people better understand my position: A meteor falls from the sky, not just any meteor, more like a small planetoid. This planet could hit earth, or it could get five feet above the earth and be blown away by a bigger meteor. (Impossible, I know, but for story's sake.) Now, the way I see it, if the meteor hits, my super-high expectations are hit on the nose with the full force of Bungie's magic - UNLESS they are blown away with with the full force of Bungie's magic meteor. I'm destroyed either way. /tangent Now, having played Halo2, I must ask myself: How does it compare to Halo? I think they are equals - In gameplay, story, and our newcomer may have a slight edge on Multiplayer (Slight, only because there was no Prisoner redux). I did enjoy Halo a lot - more so than Halo2, the sole reason for this is I had NO IDEA what was going to happen (I bought Halo because it was that or Fuzion Frenzy in my Xbox bundle.) But at the end of Halo, I knew something: Halo2 was on the way. I didn't need an announcement trailer, nor a magazine spread, nor a fansite. Halo2 was coming, and when it did, there was going to be blood. Tuesday, when I finished Halo2, I knew something: Halo3 is on it's way. I need no announcement trailer, nor a magazine spread, nor a fansite. Halo3 is coming, and when it does, there's going to be blood. And I do love my blood. Chester. |
