More fuel for the flames. And who's fault is it? | |

In Response To: My Thursday morning BBQ (just add flames) *long (Ducain) This is spot on. First I suppose I'll add my fuel to the fire and expect a toasting, and then I'll tell you who's fault all this is. (Skip to "WHO'S FAULT?" right now if you like). Here's the fuel then... After years of Halo:CE being the only thing I would play (you'd think it was embedded rather than on a disk), Halo2 was an early birthday present (very early - it's not supposed to be until January). I just couldn't wait for it so my wife bought it for me. She just happened to be watching as the last cutscene rolled and the MC is saying his piece about finishing the fight. She says "have you finished?". "No", I reply, "There's loads to go yet, the story is only just getting to the point now". Oops, that's the credits then. WTF? What about all the stuff I was expecting? Who stole my story? Why am I not fighting my way around Earth, wasting the Covenenant homeworld and uncovering all the mysteries that we have debated these last few years? I was stunned - I really felt robbed. I was actually worried right at the start of Halo 2, when I saw the jerky stuttering animation of Johnson as you leave the gunnery sergeant and head for the lift. I was thinking "three years and the cinematics are jumpy?". That was soon forgotten when I got a battle rifle and then an SMG in both hands. Suddenly it was great. But then the ending - well I was disappointed. Having been cut short I started to forget how good the new stuff was - the weapons, the new enemies, the Jackal snipers (little ba*ds) and a tank that actually reloaded in a life saving manner, and (at long last) a real close combat weapon - gimme that sword!. The Story was why I wanted Halo2. The whole immersion thing. But I was robbed. Or maybe I was just expecting something so much better than Halo, as Halo was so much better than what went before? And why do I want to be the Arbiter? Sure its a great movie style idea, but I'm the MC. A covenant-killing machine. I am combat evolved. But no. Now I'm playing the enemy in antique armour. Interesting, but not what I wanted after doing it for one level, thanks. And no big scary surprises either. I mean real scary like when you first encounter the flood on a dark night at 2am because you've been playing for hours. Now that was a plot twist that made you jump out of your skin! WHO'S FAULT? No doubt some of this is Bungie's fault - they made Halo2, they led us to believe so many things would be resolved, and they got us hooked with the original Halo which was superb beyond compare IMO. But they gave so little away apart from the hints ,so you can't say they promised, I suppose. Some of this is HBO's fault. I'm a constant reader of the forum, but have only posted a few times, and have learned much. Most of the people here are so knowledgeable and there is some great speculative stuff here too that filled the 3-year wait. HBO is as immersive as Halo itself. So much to see and take on board! Long may it continue. But mostly it is MY fault. I got immersed in the game, the story, the waiting, the forum, the story page - I convinced myself that Halo 2 would be the greatest thing ever created after Halo:CE, and that the story would be told to my satisfaction and that all the things I didn't like would be fixed the way I wanted, and, and, and... Well actually, on reflection, it ain't half bad. And if there is a Halo3, I'll be grateful. And I'll buy it. And a Halo 4 too, probably, if the story isn't finished. And when the story is finally finished in Halo:Omega (or whatever), then I really will be disappoined because the story will be over and I'll know there will be no more. Apart from several Halo games to play for as long as I want to. Oh, and the Halo community here at HBO to explain all of the things that I never even realised needed explaining until I read about them here. Halo - It has a certain something...
