In Response To: Throwing Down the Gauntlet (Finn)

: With reasons that none can truly understand, the first option for many will
: be to easily jump and skip to the game's conclusion; we will speak no more
: of these.

: Many more will test the waters on normal, if for other reason than to get a
: handle on the controls and the new gameplay characteristics. There is no
: shame here.

: For others, a more difficult road lies ahead; one full of heroic effort and
: sacrifice.

: And while these are commendable paths, I believe there is yet a higher
: calling.

: I challenge anyone who is willing or able to complete Halo 2 for the first
: time, either alone or with a friend co-operatively, while playing all
: levels only on Legendary.

: Who will rise to the occasion? :)

: Finn

Heh. I've been debating this for a while myself.

For me it's just a question of what will be the most fun the first time through. If I had initially tried to play Halo 1 on legendary I think I probably would have thrown the XBox out the window before I finished the second level. On the other hand, I think I'm a bit more skilled now than I was back then, so it becomes an issue of how much Halo 1 skills = halo 2 skills.

From what I've heard, the general feel of the controls is pretty similar to the original, so from that perspective it should be much easier to jump in at a higher difficulty level. I'd imagine that many of the tactics that worked in the original will still be effective as well. Granted, the weapons will be different, but if the controls and the basic feel of the game are familiar, and you know what tactics you want to use, I think that integrating the new weapons should be fairly quick. So, assuming that the general design philosophy stays the same (that is, there are no cheap additions like annoying boss fights or stupid puzzles), I'd guess the difficulty of the transition from 1 to 2 will be mostly governed by any differences in the AI, adapting to the new enemies, and learning the good weapon choices for each new situation, which is made a deeper decision now by the addition of dual-wielding.

I don't know...I'd be interested to see how well I could handle totally new environments and enemies at whatever is the highest difficulty level. Most likely, I'll end up playing at least the first level on normal while I get used to things, and then replaying it at the highest difficulty. Depending on how that goes, I'll decide how I want to proceed through the rest. :-)
