Cool theory! A few questions [numbered] popped into my head after reading this:

Dr. Halsey says: "You had to be there at that place and time to recover us and remove the crystal - time and space warped to make that event occur."

[1]Does this indicate that the crystal itself intelligent? or Does some other intelligence or programming control it? or Does it react to certain conditions (slipspace, lots of energy, the presence of the Index within Cortana)? or Does it warp time after being removed from its cradle?

If it is the third one, then might the crystal be a failsafe? If the flood get out of control and Halo is unable to contain the flood, then someone could get the crystal, activating its time warping abilities, and go back in time to prevent the unleashing of the flood. (this would, of course, go against the theory that Metatron has laid out. [that the time warp occurred so that the events accomplished in Halo would be assured to play out])

Halo: First Strike ends with the MC and crew in a random slipspace jump. Upon arrival they will then make the jump to Earth (fulfilling the requirements of the Cole Protocol). If the Chief does go to the same Halo installation:

[2] What important reason would he have? Obviously it would have to be an awfully compelling one since warning the Earth of imminent invasion by the Covenant is pretty darn important!
