The above sparked a thought in me. What if the crystals are actually the Forerunner and the Forerunner are just AI's from the distant future?

Sort of like current AI's became so evolved they were actually able to take shape (crystal) and didn't need to be hosted (i.e. Cortona).

I'm not sure that if Cortona wanted to she could take over the Master Chief's brain. Can she? If so then, it would help me understand the MC's motive in going back in time (the crystals having the ability to make someone do their bidding).

I think the HALO universe boils down to good and evil. We have been exposed to some religion in HALO-1 and more in the first 3 books. The real religious part will be revealed in HALO-2 and the next book. When I say religion I mean the Covenants belief that the Forerunner are connected with religion. O.K., going out on a limb here. What if the forerunner is perceived by the covenant as GOD? Not God's plural but God singular. Are the Forerunner ever described as Forerunners as in more than one? Think about the universe. Not a speck of randomness! Runs with the efficiency of a sundial, clock, computer, AI, Forerunner.

I don't think the Forerunner is God but I think the Covenant do. I think the Forerunner are a collection of AI's in the shape of crystals from the future.
I also believe they are now active and up to something but what I'm not sure.
I also think that when the Forerunner are revealed all the oieces will come into place.
