When talking about characters changing the past, or future, you get into a blurry area. I thought about this a LOT before I wrote this theory. Obviously, something involving the artifact warping time does indeed occur. However, I was extreamly careful not to say things like, "Halsey could stop the destruction of Halo!"

Here is an example of what I'm talking about:
KEY
MC 1 = The MC who hasn't yet gone back in time
MC 2 = The MC who has gone back in time
MC = The combined events effect on the MC

The MC 2, the one who went back in time, decides to go back to Halo and destroy it before the MC 1 arrives, as some have suggested. Now, for the sake of argument, lets say that he succeds in destroying Halo, which, again, would have been before the MC ever arrived.

Here is the central question. Is that possible, from the stand point of a science fiction novel, not reality?

I say it isn't possible, because if the MC 2 destroyed Halo before MC 1 originally arrived at Halo, then the MC would have never landed on Halo, or retrieved the Index. Now, if the MC never retrieved the Index, then he wouldn't be THE Reclaimer, and the artifact wouldn't have warped space and time around his actions. If the MC wasn't THE Reclaimer, then he couldn't have rescued the survivors on Reach, and the artifact, in the EXACT same fashion that we're told in the book. This means that the events that lead the MC 2 to go back in time and destroy Halo never happen; therefore, he couldn't destroy Halo, because if he did, then it would directly disrupt the events that lead the MC to that place in time.

Now, is it possible for the MC to go back in time? The book shows that he does, which would mean that he has actually changed history. BUT, the history he changes must have not disrupted the events that lead him to go back in time. Basically, the MC can change history, but he can NOT change history if it disrupts his individual timeline in any major way, such as the destroying Halo before he ever arrived.

The same concept applies to this theory:)
