Heh, you must not have seen the Marathon Story Page, then. ;-)

Really, though, anyone can play through the game without having read the books or attempted to unravel the rest of the story. Making that possible is one of the things Cortana does. "Go here. Destroy this. Shoot those guys." If you didn't understand all of the background stuff, would you ignore her (or Durandal, or whatever) and stop playing?

All this complex, behind-the-scenes intricacy is what makes it fun. ;-)
