I'll have to think more about this. The idea of a time loop such as described requires a fixed background for time. As the MC travels through the loop, each time there are less and less "spaces" in the background for which he is allowed to interact without changing major events (which is not possible in a time loop such as described).

This time loop would be recursive until it reached a singularity, in other words, the MC would eventually end up with no options except to remove himself; e.g. kill himself to end the loop.

Or then again, maybe I'm just very confused.

Believe it or not, I like more the time practiced used in the last Harry Potter movie. The one's in the time loop's effects have to actually be conscious of their actions, if they were to change events, they would simply wipe themselves out of existance or some other very bad effect.

So if the MC is to return to pre-destroyed Halo 04, he and those with him caught in the time loop would have to be very careful what they do so not to change events. In this manner the time loop is not a recursive loop leading to a singularity but instead it is like living on borrowed time. The loop goes around once, during that loop you have only one chance to get things right. You basically have, like you said, two of you existing at the same time doing different things. One of you with the previous knowledge of the actions of the other of you, and the other without that knowledge.

So anyway, what I'm getting at is that the artifact can and was destroyed. It is not indestructable. All we might have is a single loop or "borrowed" time for the MC and folks to get a few things done.

From the Covenant point of view, it might appear much like the Japanese during the Battle of Midway, when they thought they had sunk multiple US carriers, the reality was that the same one didn't sink the first time thanks to excellent damage control. Yes the Covenant are going to have a fit trying to deal with two MCs... so it might appear.

Just some thoughts. Again, nice job.
