perhaps to find new tech (to battle covies/flood) sooner.
think about it:

take all the most advanced tech you have, send it back in time, the 'past' humans find them, research them, and improve them, then after time has passed, whoever sent them back has more tech, and could send THAT back in a cycle.

1000's of years of research found in no time at all
