You know, I'm not terribly clever about such things and, well, I have been at home with small children for almost five years, so...LOL

Anyway, if they have DNA, wouldn't it have to be extremely adaptive to be able to have an effect on many different species? So, even if you just mapped the DNA, you wouldn't know what it would do to every host unless you had a sample of the actual thing to infect someone with, right?

Maybe the DNA is so unstable they didn't feel confident in being able to extract it, store it and reconsitute it into the original creatures for future study?

Or maybe their version of DNA just can't be grasped at this time (even by Forerunner), so they kept the actual spores around until they could come up with the solution to that problem?
